Top 5 Germ-Carrying Items in Your Home

Many items in your home could be swarming with germs and bacteria. This fact is hard to undo entirely. The best way to be proactive about fighting germs is to know what items in your home are most likely to harbour germs. With this knowledge, you can more easily tackle spreading germs at the source. Here are the top five germ carrying items in your home.

1. Remote Controls and Videogame Controllers

Remote controls and game controllers are easy places for germs to build up. Many people touch these common items throughout the day, spreading food, dust, skin oils, and other germs to and from them. With multiple people touching and transferring germs all day, you can imagine what is lurking on the buttons that you cannot see. Be conscious about wiping down remotes and controllers and getting in between each space.

2. Office Supplies

The office is a place where many different people come together to share time, ideas, conversations… and germs. Yes, your workplace could be spreading foreign germs into your home by via any supplies you take home – pens, paper, files, your work bag, or even just your uniform. To reduce this happening, you can take steps to improve your office’s hygiene practices, such as making sure your company uses a corporate cleaning specialist, such as AMC Cleaning, on a regular basis.

3. Sponges

Sponges are the perfect place for germs to lurk. The soft and wet surface holds the germs and,as you wipe down counters and wash dishes, the germs simply transfer from one space to another. Dish towels are just as bad when you use a dirty one to wipe down the counters. Try to swap out your rags and sponges for new ones routinely. Before using sponges, wet them and then place them in the microwave for a few minutes to get rid of any germs that may be loitering.

4. Doorknobs

Doorknobs and handles hold and transfer a lot of bacteria. People come in and out and open and close doors without washing their hands and without realising that their hands now have more germs than before. Doorknobs into the house and into rooms are not the only worry though; handles to drawers, pantries, and the refrigerator harbour just as many germs. Be certain to wipe down these areas with disinfecting spray when you clean in order to eliminate the further spread of germs.

5. Toothbrushes

Toothbrushes hold all the germs from your mouth and everything from the air as they wait for the next use. You are cleaning your teeth, but the previous wash’s bacteria may still be lurking. Bacteria from your toothbrush are unlikely to make you sick, but you should still take precautions. Buy a new toothbrush every few months. Keep your toothbrush in a place that is as far from the toilet as it can be. Clean the holder regularly.

Your home houses not just you and your family, but germs as well. Be proactive and eliminate the spread of germs as much as you can to keep you and your family safe from diseases.
